Founded in 1766, Rutgers is New Jersey’s premier institution of higher learning and a top-tier national research university. Rutgers is also a land-grant university. The original mission of the national organization H-4 is to introduce land-grant universities to the next generation. That is why the university has a Department of 4-H Youth Development. In most cases, a New Jersey youth’s first contact with Rutgers is through 4-H.
In Essex and Hudson counties, agriculture-based 4-H programs under the auspices of Rutgers are very popular. Children participate in garden planning, planting, and up to harvesting. It is hoped that the knowledge and skills gained about food systems and community food needs will help them, in the future, become food advocates for themselves and their community.
There are also the 4-H STEM programs throughout the university that enable the youth of New Jersey to work with scientists and engineers and gain first-hand exposure to the latest research at Rutger. 4-H is a bridge that enables the university to share its vast knowledge to individuals throughout the state.
