Steven Darien is the chairman and CEO of The Cabot Advisory Group, LLC. An experienced HR executive, Steven Darien is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
SHRM is a global organization for human resource professionals. Its mission is to elevate human resource practice by testing and certifying exemplary human resource professionals. One of the certifications is SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP).
SHRM-CP is for HR professionals who implement workplace policies, perform HR functions, and serve as intermediaries between stakeholders and staff members. The qualifications for SHRM-CP testing vary depending on the person’s level of education.
A person without a bachelor’s degree or one who is currently working toward attaining a bachelor’s degree must have at least four years of experience in an HR role. If the person’s degree is HR-related, he or she must have at least three years of experience in an HR role.
A person with an HR-related degree needs only one year of HR work experience to qualify for testing, while a person with a non-HR degree needs at least two years of HR work experience. A person with an HR-related graduate degree needs to be serving in an HR role at the time of application, while a person with a non-HR graduate degree needs at least one year of HR work experience. SHRM defines one year of work experience as at least 1,000 hours of demonstrable HR work in a year.
Candidates who meet the criteria can create an account on the SHRM portal, register for the exam, submit their application documentation, sign the required affirmation statements, pay an application fee, and wait for verification. After successful verification, they will receive an “authorization to test” letter by e-mail.
